What is a Mobile Notary?

A Notary Public is a licensed, bonded and insured individual of integrity that is appointed by the California Secretary of State to administer oaths, verify signatures and identify prospective signers. As an impartial witness, it’s our job to also determine ones willingness and capacity to understand the document being signed. A ‘Mobile Notary’ (aka Traveling Notary) is one who travels to their clientele and performs the act of Notarization on site at their location. Be it at your home, office, coffee shop, hospital, government facility, nursing home, airport etc, we are here to serve you wherever you need us.

What types of documents can be Notarized?

First, I should note that we Notarize signatures on documents (not necessarily the document itself, which can be a common misconception). With that said, there’s really no limitation on the type of documents we might come across on a given day. It doesn’t necessarily matter if the document has typos, is hand written vs typed, what font, spacing, layout or language the documents were written in etc…as long as there is a place for you to sign, then there is the potential for a signature to be Notarized. One of the only document-related stipulations the State of California informs us of is that there is to be no blank spaces on the document in question prior to Notarization (except the signature line of course). So that means all dates, initials titles etc need to be completed prior to the Notarization.

Having said that, for reference purposes, we’ve included a small list of some common documents we see day in and day out. This list is not comprehensive and does not include every type of document that might be eligible for a Notarization. Should you have any questions with regards to this list or your specific type of document, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

What forms of identification do you accept?

According to the California Secretary of State, when completing an Acknowledgment or Jurat, a Notary Public is required to certify the identity of the signer on a given document. Identity is established if the Notary Public is presented with “satisfactory evidence” of the signers identity. “Satisfactory evidence” means the absence of any information, evidence, or other circumstances which would lead a reasonable person to believe that the individual is not the individual he or she claims to be.

California Code 1185[b] lists some very specific documents that a Public Notary can use to identify someone. These forms of ID must be unexpired (or issued within the past 5 years), be shown in physical form (photocopies or electronic versions are not acceptable), and the name listed on the document being signed should match that of the ID being presented. That said, I have a compiled a list of acceptable documents that we can use to Notarize ones signature.

1. A California Driver’s License or Non-Driver’s ID
2. A U.S. Passport (or U.S. Passport Card)
3. An inmate identification card issued by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation
4. A driver’s License or Official Non-Driver’s ID Card issued by any U.S. State
5. A Canadian or Mexican Driver’s License issued by the local government
6. A U.S. Military ID
7. A valid Foreign Passport from the Applicant’s Country of Citizenship
8. An Employee ID issued by a Public or Local Government Agency/Office
9. An identification card issued by a federally recognized tribal government
10. A valid consular identification document issued by a consulate from the applicant’s country of citizenship.
11. The oath or affirmation of one or two credible witnesses

What makes Golden Gate Mobile Notary different?
While we think there are a lot of things that separate us from the competition, we believe there are a few core values that really give us the edge. First of all, we are experienced. Every notary on our team is licensed, bonded, and insured with the California Secretary of States office. Additionally, everyone on our team has at least two terms under their belt (each Notary’s tenure is 4 years). This ensures we are always paying fastidious and meticulous attention to your important documents. Details are absolutely everything to us, therefore we strive to put our experience in the field to work for you. Secondly, we have a streamlined and efficient process for everything Notary and Apostille related. We specialize in curveballs and encourage you to throw us some thing that we may not have seen before. Be it scanning or printing services to shipping and courier work…if there’s a will, there’s a way in our book. We are also proud to be the first and only Notary service in San Francisco to offer true online booking for your convenience. Some others have online request forms that are sent via email etc, but we have a powerful integrated scheduling platform embedded right on our website that prioritizes open slots for fast and easy booking. Third, we pride ourselves in being personable, easygoing, secure and always having a service oriented attitude regardless of what situation may arise. We place great value on timeliness and communication and we understand that YOU are the customer and we’re going to do everything in our power to make sure you are more than satisfied with our services. Fourth, we are the only Notary Public service in San Francisco to be both an approved vendor of the City & County of San Francisco as well as the California Secretary of State. We are very proud of this fact as it shows not only our level of commitment to the City and State we live, but also that we are the go-to service for so many County, State and Federal programs in our vicinity. Some of these programs include the Department of Housing, the City Attorney’s office, the SF Unified School District, the Federal Reserve Bank, and the Public Defender’s office to name a few. Lastly, we are either accredited members and/or highly rated and reviewed by nearly every applicable association there is in our industry including the National Notary Association (NNA), American Association of Notaries (ANA), 123Notary and NotaryRotary alike. We have perfect 5 star ratings across the major review sites such as YelpGoogleFacebookThumbtackYellowPages and the BBB. And most recently, we have become proud members of the San Francisco Green Business Program which recognizes local businesses for their work in striving to maintain a low emissions and eco-friendly workplace.
Can you help facilitate a Loan Closing or Estate Plan?
Yes absolutely! We work with numerous Title and Escrow offices as well as Estate Planning Attorneys from the Bay Area and around the Country to facilitate clients’ important documents being signed. From printing, scanning, and faxing to shipping and courier services we can help with every step in the process. We are easy to communicate with, pay attention to details and licensed, and very experienced. We’ve processed thousands of closings throughout the years and we want to put our expertise in the field to work for you. Should you have any comments, question or concerns with regards to the process, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Can you pre-sign the documents before meeting with us?

Yes and no, it depends on the type of Notarization that’s being requested.
In California, we normally have two different types of Notarizations that we can perform. One of them is an Acknowledgment and the other is a Jurat. The Acknowledgment is used to verify the identity of ones signature on a given document as well as acknowledge that the person did indeed personally appear before the Notary. The Jurat on the other hand not only certifies the persons identity as valid and having appeared in front of the Notary, but also that they have made a sworn statement (given by the Notary) in person with regards to the document/statement in question. There is a slight distinction here between the two types of Notarization in that the Jurat requires personal appearance at the time of signing signing due to the fact that an affirmation is being given prior to signing. The Acknowledgment does also require personal appearance, however it does not require that the Notary visually be there to see that the signatory has signed the document in person.
Now you might be asking, does this mean you can do the Notarizations remotely if you are able to see my ID? It does not unfortunately. Since both types of Notarization require personal appearance as well as needing to sign/thumbprint the public record (aka Notary journal), the requirement to appear in person is an absolute must in the State of California.

Have questions? Well we have answers!
We encourage you to reach out to us with any comments, questions or concerns you might have with regards to our Notary services. Below you can securely message us and one of our experienced Notary’s will get back to you via email (normally within an hour). We look forward to being in touch!
